Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Toolkit
Welcome
This web-based toolkit supports Dietitians-Nutritionists (D-Ns) to integrate sustainability into practice. D-Ns around the world work with food and throughout food systems. In these roles, you have a unique opportunity to influence these systems to be more sustainable, as well as nutritious.
Our Vision:
This toolkit is guided by our vision that D-Ns bring a deep understanding of SFS into their practice and play key roles in creating healthy communities and accelerating a shift towards SFS.Â
Our Objectives:
To provide accessible, relevant, and transferable information on the interconnections of SFS and human health.
To provide practical, evidence-based tools for incorporating sustainability into nutrition and dietetic practice in a diversity of roles and cultural contexts.
To facilitate learning and collaboration to deepen understanding and support the incorporation of sustainability into nutrition and dietetic practice.
Our Guiding Principles
The ICDA SFS Toolkit is guided by the following principles:
| Sustainability | using systems approaches that consider environmental, social, and economic impacts and strive for health, resilience, and continuity in all these systems |
| Transparency | reflecting on and striving to be explicit about our assumptions, perspectives, and social locations |
| Equity | reflective of a range of geographic, linguistic, cultural, social, and ecological contexts, as well as diverse ways of knowing (epistemological) and methodological approaches |
| Evidence-based | critical, ongoing evaluation of sources of knowledge and perspectives |
| Diversity | reflective of a range of geographic, linguistic, cultural, social, and ecological contexts as well as diverse ways of knowing (epistemological) and methodological approaches |
| Dynamism | responsive to changes in our understanding of nutrition and sustainability |
| Curiosity | the spirit of openness towards continual learning and growth |
About the Team
The ICDA SFS Toolkit is for and by us. The content and format are guided by the vision and objectives and have been built on contributions from ICDA members (National Dietetics-Nutrition Associations [NDAs]), with leadership from our SFS Advisory Group members, researchers, and students from around the world who all volunteer their time. Â
ICDA Board of Directors
All of the work on sustainability has been supported with ICDA funding and the strategic decision-making of the ICDA Board of Directors.
Collaboration
The work has been guided by collaborative leadership from Liesel Carlsson and Stacia Nordin. There have been many people contributing actively to the work, who are acknowledged in our Sustainability, Food Systems, and Nutrition Learning Modules.
How to Use the SFS Toolkit
Explore SFS through a series of open-access learning modules or self-led learning resources that support applied nutrition and dietetics practice.
