1952 Establishment and Progress of the International Committee of Dietetic Associations
Early proposals and decisions about an international forum for dietitians are described in A History of the British Dietetic Association. Newman Books; London; 1961; pp 65 - 69. A brief history presented at the closing of the 12th International Congress of Dietetics can be printed in pdf format.
After the Second World War, Miss D.J. TenHaaf of the Netherlands proposed that an International Dietetic Association be established. This proposal led to the first International Dietetic Congress held in Amsterdam in 1952. The principal object of the Congress was to discuss mutual dietetic and nutritional problems, the training of dietitians, their responsibilities, and their scope of work in various countries.
Several National Dietetic Associations appointed official representatives to meet during the Congress, and from amongst these representatives, the first International Interim Committee of Dietitians was elected, and served until 1956, when the 2nd Congress in Rome elected an International Committee. Many national dietetic associations have provided leadership on International Committees since 1956.
